Sabbath
in Fort Cochin
24 x 22", acrylic on silk
"I
remember
Muriel, my mother’s Jewish friend, lighting the candles of
the Sabbath. I remember Fort Cochin, where we visited the Koders,
the Jacobs, and the Helga families long before they all emigrated to
Israel.
I remember the Jewish synagogue my father took us to in the
Fort, and the crowded bazaars where spices were bought and sold. I
remember Muriel’s pastel coloured saris with gold zeri and her
lace scarfs.
And I remember how much my mother missed them all when they
went away."
