"Some
of the most beautiful women in Malabar are from the aristocratic
families of the Kheyyi Moslems of Tellicherry. Known as the Mappilas
they are considered to be the descendants of Arab merchants and
native Malabaris. Ummas (Mapilla women) wore the Poonkuppayam and
thattam, the long-sleeved blouse and the scarf covering the hair. It
was also customary to wear heavy jewelry including alukathu (large
filigree earrings)."
