The
Thamburati (the Princess)
10.5 x 13.5", acrylic on paper
"I
grew up in Trivandrum, the erstwhile capital of the kingdom of
Travancore. Despite the post-Independence atmosphere, the
influence of the monarchy prevailed. Our world was an unusual one,
encompassing the common good of the democracy, and the privileges
of the King, Queen, Princesses and Highnesses. I had the good
fortune to visit several palaces and attend concerts of music and dance,
hosted by the royal family. This painting is that of a Kerala
princess playing the veena. The veena is a stringed instrument
with a dragon head carved at one end."
