"I have always been
fascinated by the Havelis (traditional mansions). During my travels to the Punjab and Rajasthan,
I had the opportunity to visit a few that belonged to my friends. Inside
each was a world in itself. Courtyards and gardens, winding
staircases and the parakeets. Within this world, women could be
themselves, free of purdah. Here they dressed up, sang, and danced
with carefree abandon.
the rise of nuclear families I doubt whether the Havelis will last for
long. As an artist, this painting is my tribute to a wonderful past."
