Ammachi
19 x
25.5", acrylic on paper
"We
lived in Kottayam in the mid-sixties when most Christian women
wore the traditional 'chatta and mundu' along with large golden
earrings. Ammachi was my friend Beena's grandmother. Ammachi always
sat on the porch overlooking the garden and the fields, and read
her Bible. I remember how serene she looked, clad in spotless
white with her neatly pleated 'vishari' behind. Today the
chatta and mundu are worn only by the older Christian women as
the youngsters prefer sari, salwar and the maxi."
